THE CELEBRITY DIARY OF JEFFREY JOHN is a delightful, fresh children’s book full of the humour and language which will be readily recognisable and enjoyed by readers of six years and up. A first time publication written and illustrated by Betty Jean McRae, the author was herself only eleven years old when penning the story and drawing the accompanying illustrations. However, Betty has been prolific in her writing and drawing for short stories for a considerable number of years and of a style which has the reader connecting with the characters, becoming absorbed by the plot and finding themselves irresistibly drawn to turn every page, wondering what is going to happen next...
THE CELEBRITY DIARY OF JEFFREY JOHN is the first of a series of books and tracks a young lad who has to cope with a smothering, over-affectionate mother (who is never actually seen!), a big sister with a hideous boyfriend, yet gets by through dreaming of achieving fabulous fame and fortune. Will this fantasy ever become reality? Perhaps, when, with the help of his friends Lucy and Cheese, Jeffrey is introduced to ‘The Sparkliest Man in the World’....
[PAPERBACK - SIGNED] Alisdair McRae’s history, ‘How the Scottish won the English Civil War’, argues that the Scots’ entry into the civil war was so decisive that it was like America entering the two world wars, introducing such an overwhelming number and standard of troops that they tipped the balance of conflict so there could be only one outcome. The Scots, having fought in huge numbers in the 30 years war, were well equipped, had excellent training and experience, and were politically highly motivated when they entered the deadlocked war on the side of parliament.
This book reveals the extent of Scots’ participation and influence in what was a complex era in UK history. Scotland committed and lost a higher proportion of its population to the conflict than England itself, the Scots’ campaigns a catalogue of foul-weather marches, protracted sieges, illness and malnutrition. There was little ‘glory of war’; discipline was brutal, and death was just as likely to come from starvation or disease as from amongst the ranks of the enemy.
One unit the book focuses on - Fraser’s dragoons, was the only dragoon regiment in Lord Leven’s Army of the Covenant. Involved from the first Scottish action in the war, it fought decisively at Marston Moor – allowing a successful cavalry charge of the allied left wing (credit for which Cromwell was to steal) - annihilated Newcastle’s famous Whitecoats, then returned to Scotland with a cavalry strike force to smash Montrose at Philiphaugh. The unit later tarnished its reputation through exacting violence and robbery on the civilians of north England, while its colonel, Hugh Fraser, was to suffer an excruciatingly protracted death by poisoning.
